QUESTION: I can hear better at work and in meetings than with family in my own home. What can I do about that?

Answer: A majority of patients experience such difficulty in their homes. Typical homes can be chambers where speech does not carry well because of absorbency from carpets, drapes, and overstuffed furniture. Hard reflective surfaces such as hardwood flooring and tile, high vaulted ceilings, and large windows with no drapes will also influence sound perception. Additionally, a person’s specific type of hearing loss and how well family members articulate will be factors to take into consideration. We meet with patients regularly to teach effective listening strategies, management techniques, and speaking methods. It is an ongoing part of our comprehensive hearing improvement protocol.
