Question: Will you please help me explain to someone the reasons for getting a hearing aid and not a personal amplifier like you see in the newspaper or drug stores?

Answer: A hearing aid is not the same thing as what you buy in the drug stores or even order through the newspaper. Those devices are not intended for persons with hearing loss but instead are merely sound amplifiers. They are not adjusted for the amount of hearing loss at specific frequencies and they do not self-adjust for noise management within the room. These devices provide some increased volume, but only up to a certain level. As we have mentioned before, a hearing device is only part of the path toward improved hearing. It also involves experienced audiological care to address personal communication needs and provide verification of improvement.
